To the CMA Baseball Community:
CMA Baseball is always excited for the spring to arrive. With over ten spring sports, parents weekend, alumni weekend, and senior functions, spring at Culver is busy, so we want to take this opportunity to update you on the CMA baseball program.
To support the development of our student-athletes, the program relies on a philosophy that fully embraces Culver’s mission. Our core belief is that the process and approach we take to the game is more important than the results. In order to own this philosophy, the program frequently discusses and employs a focused and purposeful mental approach, at the pinnacle of which is: play one pitch at a time. When it comes to pitching, CMA baseball believes in location, changing speeds, and challenging hitters by throwing two strikes in the first three pitches. Defensively, we stress making the routine play and eliminating the big inning. At the plate, we teach players to attack strikes aggressively, to hit mistakes, never to be an easy out when ahead in the count, and to battle with two strikes. On the base paths the program preaches take the extra, which is an intelligent, aggressive approach to placing pressure on defenses from the base paths. More important than any specific tactical or philosophical approach is that our players understand and believe in our program’s priorities and vision.
As coaches, we use the program’s process-oriented philosophy to assess our success. Our practices are designed to focus on the pillars outlined above, and, crucially, after a game we use the same program pillars to discuss our performance. Don’t get us wrong; we’re as competitive as they come. There is a bigger picture though, and the lessons learned in the baseball program are transferable lessons. The program’s philosophy compliments the Culver mission, and we are proud to serve our student athletes in this environment.
If you’re on campus this spring, we invite you to stop by Wilkins Field during a practice or a game. Furthermore, there are other ways to check out what we’re doing on the diamond this spring as well as see player and program highlights. You can follow us on Twitter (@CulverBaseball), on Facebook (Culver Baseball), or on the Culver website. We also provide a live game cast of our varsity games via GameChanger (search Culver Eagles Baseball). Be on the lookout for how our players engage in service opportunities through the Culver Keeper’s senior service project and our 5th annual CMA Baseball Invitational.
